Dear Belltown Ratepayers,
As many of you know, the Metropolitan Improvement District (MID) began offering its valued Clean & Safe services to Belltown on July 1st of this year. Perhaps you’ve seen our Ambassadors hard at work on the street, or perhaps you’ve met Dalana Collier, our Customer Service Specialist, at an event recently. Regardless, I’m happy to report that we’re off to a great start!
So, what have we been up to? Among a lot of other activities, our Clean Ambassadors have made significant headway in clearing the graffiti, stickers, and posters off of light poles, pay stations, and other public areas. Our Safety and Outreach Ambassadors (usually on bikes) have also been active in the area. Their work includes morning wake-ups of the homeless population, often followed by proactive outreach to connect those in need of services with the appropriate organizations. We have also funded 14 additional off-duty Police emphasis patrols of four officers each (they look just like they would on a normal patrol), many of them focused on the Belltown neighborhood.
I’ve attached a report that outlines some of our more impactful deliverables to the community, but here are a few that we think stand out:
- Nearly 12,000 incidences of graffiti on public property (including parking pay stations) cleaned
- Over 850, 33-gallon bags of trash collected
- Over 300 bags of leaves collected
- Over 90 incidences of homeless wake-ups completed
As you’ll notice on the report, the month of July was particularly busy when it came to cleaning graffiti given the amount that had accumulated over the years. In addition, the rate at which we’re picking up leaves will only be increasing as we head into the Fall season.
We’ve also been reaching out to the community. Last month we served as a sponsor of Night Out Seattle and hosted two MID information booths in which we introduced ourselves and our services to hundreds of Belltown residents. We’ve been actively reaching out to small business owners in the area to sign them up for the Conditions of Entry program. This gives us the ability to conduct morning wake ups that I referred to above. We’re just getting started, but we feel proud of the impact we’ve made in our first couple months. We also invite any input that you might have.
